The Horrible Effects of Racism In The 1930's"I wants to know why you bringing white chillun to nigger church"
-Lula pg.119 Racism. This sentence defines it in the Negroes world back in the 1930's Lula is a racist black woman toward the whites it goes to show that not just whites were/are racist but that blacks are to. "...Scout Finch's daddy defended niggers." -Cecil Jacobs pg.74 Being as young as he is, Cecil hasn't had time to break away from his parents points of view, he most likely heard his parents talking about the Tom Robinson case and even though he is only about 8 he still knows how to "blend" in with everybody else by saying this. |
Killing A Mockingbird Is A Sin"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.
-Miss Maudie pg.90 Miss Maudie is correct in her thinking, there's no reason to shoot a creature if it's not doing anything wrong man or animal. This connects to the story line in Tom Robinson's case he allegedly raped Mayella Ewell when he didn't was conflicted by her testimony and was put in jail he was shot for trying to escape a jail that he was put in for no reason just like if you shot a mockingbird because you thought it ate your garden. "Well,it'd be sort of like shootin' a mockingbird, wouldn't it?" -Scout pg.276 Scout was talking about Mr. Arthur killing Mr.Ewell in the novel Mr.Arthur was doing nothing wrong he fact was doing what was right by killing Mr.Ewell he saved the kids and in a way avenged Tom Robinson, by doing what was right and Mr.Heck Tate said Ewell fell on his knife so that he wouldn't be "shooting" a mockingbird metaphorically speaking. |
